The Alberta government introduced new reclamation security rules for the renewable energy industry in June 2025. In this report, we compared Alberta's new rules to that of 27 other jurisdictions. It turns out that Alberta created a more onerous reclamation security system than all the other jurisdictions. Alberta’s rules have the highest percentage of security required upfront and do not subtract salvage, or scrap, value from the gross decommissioning cost in determining the security amount.
