Powering Corporate Choice
Corporate renewable energy procurement has driven billions in global clean energy investment, yet Canada lags significantly. This report examines policies enabling businesses to purchase renewable energy across Canadian provinces. From 2019-2025, 90% of Canada's 3.6 GW in corporate renewable deals occurred in Alberta, where open markets enabled procurement by default. Most other provinces have vertically integrated utility monopolies that block corporate procurement, even where businesses demand access to meet climate commitments. The report reviews 60+ U.S. "green tariff" programs and analyzes Canadian examples, providing province-specific recommendations for designing successful programs. Only Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and Ontario have taken initial steps beyond Alberta.
